Foster Factor: May 2005
By Stephen Foster
Back in the late eighties I became good friends with former Mean Red Spiders guitarist Toni Vines. It's a friendship that continues to this very day. He's been involved in various projects since the demise of the Spiders but few have come close to his latest venture THE CAMEL FOOT RAIDERS. It's something of an ambitious project. I dare say Toni could have put together yet another blues-based group and got plenty of work on reputation alone. Instead he's spread his wings musically by getting some like-minded musicians to let their hair down and play a wide range of styles taking in reggae, country and rock'n'roll along the way. Meticulously recorded by Pat Grueber at Ipswich's Gemini Studios The Camel Foot Raiders have come up with an adventurous selection of songs from the likes of Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, Peter Tosh, Steve Earle and Merle Haggard. Every single number hits the spot including the hidden track "The Harder They Come" which is a real live favourite. Martin Pender's unique voice is improving with age. His trademark growl is still there but there's lots of heartfelt singing too, so much so that Toni's lead vocal duties aren't as prominent as you might expect. Neil Topple's harp playing has also come on in leaps and bounds and with the engine room experience Darren Elden and Craig Clark this all hangs together rather nicely. Toni's better half Tina provides backing vocals and add the wonderful pedal steel guitar playing of Tony Ryan and you have an album oozing class. The title of the CD is "Lazy Days" and is up there with Toni's best work with The Mean Red Spiders. The band are always worth catching live and you'll have a chance to see them at Ipswich Music Day on the BBC Radio Suffolk stage on Sunday 3rd July at 6pm. A visit to the website will give you details of all their gigs. Get along to www.camelfootraiders.co.uk. It really would be rude not to.
Grapevine July 2005
If any band can follow Soul Kitchen it's this little lot. Fronted by the gravel-voiced Martin Pender and Ipswich music legend Toni Vines there's very little this group can't turn its hand to. They even managed to create their powerful live sound in the studio. The resulting album, Lazy Days, remains one of the best of 2005 so far.

However, I band which I did enjoy were 'Camel foot raiders'. The singer had a very gravelly voice, and I almost expected him to drop dead on the stage with lung cancer. But then, he's probably one of those people who smoke for their whole lives and live (nearly) forever.
Steamboat Tavern - Sat 6th March
A six-piece band is quite a squeeze at the Steamboat Tavern, the introduction of a seven piece is just insane. Tony Ryan, a national pedal steel guitar player, joined the band for the first time on Saturday night. Those that turned-up experienced a wonderful mix of country, rock, reggae, skar and blues. The introduction of a pedal steel guitar, complete with Stetson, certainly proved effective. The band also looked like they were enjoying themselves, and the new addition put a sincere smile on everyone's face.

"Much more than Country!"
The Camel Foot Raiders are bringing their irresistible mix of Country, Reggae, Rock and Ska to The Steamboat Tavern on Sat 06 March. They will be joined "For one night only" by the legendary Pedal Steel Guitarist Tony Ryan. Ryan has been playing pedal steel for 25 years and is a regular performer at the annual British Pedal Steel Festival in Newbury, Berkshire. He is currently a member of The Ray Peters Band and has previously worked with the young Essex born country star Glen Mitchell. Ryan says that he his looking forward to showing an Ipswich audience that pedal steel guitar is much more than a country music instrument. The Raiders eclectic set list will give him the chance to do just that. The gig is one of a series of warm up dates before the band (minus Ryan) head off to Germany for a short tour. It will be their second visit following an extremely successful "Band Exchange" with German rockers Sixth Sense who appeared at last Years Music In The Park Festival. The Raiders busy itinerary then includes an appearance at The New Wolsey Theatre's Pulse Festival in June along with Shev & The Brakes and guitarist David Baalham. The Camel Foot Raiders are local music legend Tony Vines (Who celebrated becoming a grandfather for the fourth time on 27 Feb) his wife Tina, guitarist Neil Topple, bass man Darren Elden, drummer Craig Clark and vocalist Martin Pender.
